To Roslin from the Far West
1872

This charming book evokes the village of Roslin, Rosslyn Chapel and surrounding area, circa 1872.

In the mid 19th Century, when the author was three years old, his family left Scotland and the village of Roslin for a new life in America. In the new world he was constantly filled with romantic visions of Scotland and he resolved to return one day. He was not disappointed.

The book offers a fascinating insight into the author’s return as an adult. After a 12 day steamship crossing of the Atlantic, we follow the author on a journey which takes him by horse drawn coach and on foot to the village of Roslin. The author describes the splendour of the local area: notably Roslin Glen, Roslin Castle, the Pentland Hills, and Rosslyn Chapel. This exquisite book, peppered with poetic references throughout, will leave the reader with a unique and enchanting view of Scotland from a bygone age. It will also instill in us the author’s passion for the landscape and people of his birthplace, Scotland.
